(That is a bit of a tongue twister…)
It is Membership May Month through Kiwanis International. Membership May encourages clubs to welcome new members and implement their Membership Plan that was developed earlier in the year. It also gives them awareness and impetus to celebrate their members. Kiwanis International and the District provide education opportunities and resources to improve membership efforts. Pennsylvania District is hosting 30-minute Membership webinars each week throughout May highlighting clubs throughout Kiwanis International that had successful strengthening of their clubs. Kiwanis International is highlighting resources and tools for your clubs to nurture your members and strengthen your club, like Achieving Club Excellence (ACE) Tools. I strongly encourage all members be become familiar with these tools and resources. Membership is EVERYONE’S responsibility.
But what does Membership May have to do with Mental Health? There is much research that shows that volunteering efforts have significant mental health benefits! It enhances mood by increasing feelings of happiness and satisfaction and develops new skills, increasing personal growth and enrichment. It offers opportunities for social interaction and developing relationships, decreasing loneliness and symptoms of depression. It also offers a sense of community and belonging thus enhancing overall well-being. Giving people the opportunity of Kiwanis membership is an amazing gift. By joining Kiwanis, members have the opportunity to give back to their community and meet the needs of children, which is very fulfilling. They are introduced to new people within their local community as well as throughout their Divisions, Regions and District and even Kiwanis International. They will have the opportunity to develop lifelong friendships, thus improving their overall quality of life.
Kiwanis has the ability to improve and enhance Mental Health through serving the community and develop meaningful relationships. As Kiwanians, we hare Many Hands…Making A Difference. The more hands we have in Kiwanis, the bigger difference we can make in our communities and for our children. Inviting Kiwanis membership is an intentional way to invest in Mental Health efforts in your communities.
Thank you for taking this pledge for your communities. Never underestimate the difference you make.
