Latrobe, Here Comes Kiwanis!

Greetings, fellow Pennsylvania Kiwanians!

By the time this blog spot is published, the Latrobe New Club Opening team will be busy conducting appointments with local businesses and other organizations in an effort to recruit charter members. For the past two weeks, our district phone call team has been contacting over 140 prospects to schedule appointments. We started out with 16 appointments, and dozens of opportunities for cold calls during the week. Our goal is to sign up at least 15 new members in order to charter the new Kiwanis Club of Latrobe. Wish us good luck!

The Kiwanis Club of State College has been busy recruiting new members for a “satellite” club in Penns Valley. It was felt that this approach would be more effective than trying to open a new club in that community at this time. Those new members will be a part of the State College club until such time as there are sufficient numbers to form a separate club. The good news is that members of the State College Kiwanis Club are planning a joint service project with the Penns Valley HS Key Club. It is extremely important that our adult clubs maintain a healthy relationship with SLP’s in the area.

And yes, we are gearing up to join our District Key Clubs in celebrating Key Club International’s 100th Anniversary on May 7. I will be attending the District Key Club Convention March 28-29 at the Holiday Inn in Grantville. There is still time for your club to encourage Key Clubs that you sponsor to register. I will also be attending the District Circle K Convention March 28-20 in State College.

This week is “Read Across Pennsylvania” week, when clubs around the District have scheduled book reading events. If you are having an event, please take photos (if permitted) and share with local print and social media. Also, contact our District Young Children Priority One Chair, Emily Reed at [email protected] and provide her with the number of club volunteers that participated in the event, and the number of children served. We would like to thank all of the clubs in our district who shared the joy of reading this week with children in their communities.

I look forward to marching in the annual Pittsburgh St. Patrick’s Day Parade this coming Saturday, March 15. Region 2 Trustee Shawn Smith reports that last year 25 Kiwanis members and guests marched in the parade, and had a blast! This year, we can have up to 50 people and 2 vehicles in the parade. With a name like Harp, you know that my heritage is about as Irish as it can be!

We are still seeking candidates for District Governor and Governor-Elect. As well as Lt. Governors in many Divisions. Applications for candidates of these positions can be found on our website. We would like to have all elections for Lt. Governors completed by May 28, as well as identifying all qualified candidates for Governor and Governor-Elect.

We are all looking forward to March 20, when spring arrives with the vernal equinox. Time for warmer weather, flowers beginning to bloom, and a new season of growth for our Kiwanis family. And yet another time to “Rise and Shine for the Kids!”

Best wishes,

Governor Tom

Pennsylvania District Governor
