As you are aware, my Governor’s Project this past year was Mental Health Matters. Over this past year, I have highlighted this topic to keep it in the forefront of our minds, to eliminate the stigma of mental health needs and to promote and encourage mental wellness. As Kiwanians, we are able to give back to children and our communities and this very act of helping others has positive effects on our mental health and wellness. Being connected in Kiwanis decreases loneliness, increases our relationships and solidifies our connection with others, which is positive for our mental health.
It seems rather poignant that the final month of my term in this project focuses on Suicide Prevention. This remains a very pervasive issue in our world and our children struggle and see others struggle. It is so very important to reach out to others and check-in with them. NAMI has a very robust Suicide Prevention Campaign. You can find out more information about this campaign at https://www.nami.org/stay-connected/events/awareness-events/suicide-prevention-month/ .
NAMI Keystone is the organization that the District is supporting through this Governor’s Project. Clubs and individuals have made donations throughout the year to this project and our donations thus far exceed $4,000. This Governor’s Project goes far beyond the dollar donation amount as it is about awareness, advocacy and support. Clubs throughout the district have done various service projects to support mental wellness. For example several clubs/divisions/regions participate in their local NAMI Walk. Sponsorships of our Service Leadership Programs support kids to give back to their community, to feel connected and valued. The Young Children Priority One Committee suggested books for children on mental health topics and shared easy service projects to promote wellness. The new District-wide Mental Health Reading Challenge will be a way to continue to outreach to children throughout the next year. Continue these efforts to promote mental health and wellness and self care.
Thank you for your time, talents and creativity to support the kids and communities we serve. Many Hands TRULY DO Make A Difference.
