August 26, 2024 – We are almost to Sept 30th and are excited to finish this year strong! We had a exciting and jammed pack District Convention and I am still recovering but am in awe of the Kiwanians who participated and new gain friendships and knowledge!
District Convention in Reading Recap
We just completed the 107th Reading District Convention this past weekend! It was a whirlwind and rewarding for all members in both NJ and PA Districts. We were able to meet new friends and reconnect with old friends. If you attended, I heard many positive comments, if you didn’t attend, you missed a fantastic convention and I encourage you to attend next year!
It was a pleasure for both Governor Designate Tom Harp and I to work with the NJ Governor Howard Gordon and Governor Designate Martin Slezak to make this convention a success. There was much comradery and I was very honored to receive the NJ Kiwanis Foundations Board’s Carrington Swain Fellowship award, which is an award created by the New Jersey Kiwanis Foundation Board of Trustees in 1998. It is named in honor of the two Kiwanis International Presidents from NJ District. It is one of their highest honors.
Kudos to the combined convention committee from both NJ and PA districts – PA Chair, Kevin Thomas, Melissa Simpson, District Secretary, Tiffany Callaio, Kelly Kinkaid, Janine Surmick, Sarah Zulueta, Gov-Elect Tom Harp and Governor Conrad Schlesinger. NJ Chair, Jessica CM Almeida, Nancy Hart-Esposito, District Secretary, Mark Esposito, Ed Gleaner, Gov-Elect Martin Slezak and Governor Howard Gordon.
We had many highlights and recognitions and I was thrilled to be able to honor my friends and teammates during my term, Immediate Past Governor Michael Coolbaugh and Past Governor Sarah Zulueta with a George F. Hixon Fellowship Award for their dedication, support and work to Kiwanis and to the PA District.
Many keynote speakers, educational forums, time for socializing and networking, evening events like the Reading Fightin Phils baseball game, the wine tours, the afternoon of service project at the New Journey Community Outreach, the Berks History Center Dinner, Ghost Tour and Dutch History talk. Obviously, a jam packed four days of activities that were well planned and executed. I heard many positive comments from the attendees. Thanks to the commitment to every Kiwanian who attended.
It was capped off by the induction of the incoming 2024-2025 Governor Designates Tom Harp from PA and Martin Slezak from NJ at the kickoff breakfast and a fun skit with our new International Trustee counselor Mario Bruni, from Western Canada.
Club Elections – Update on club elections results for PA, we have only improved by 2 clubs since my last communication; 67 of 132 clubs have reported elections, that’s only 51% of the clubs in the district. If you need assistance with this, please contact your Lt. Governor or Trustee for assistance. It’s very important to get this information updated. Thank you!
Membership Growth – There is still time to add new members to your club’s roster to ensure that our district ends the year with positive growth. Remember my motto for this year “Growing Membership for the Kids”!
Governor-Elect Tom Harp was unanimously elected to serve the PA District during the 2024-25 administrative year as your District Governor. Please welcome him to your clubs the same as you welcomed me. He has recruited several new Trustees, Lt. Governors and Committee Chairs for the 2024-25 administrative year. He is ready to hit the ground running on October 1st, congratulations Tom!
Thank you for your service in your communities and helping to “Grow Membership for the Kids”. Remember we want to have growth in each division as well as the PA District this administrative year!
