BUILD. NURTURE. RETAIN

Build. Nurture. Retain. is designed to enhance Kiwanis International’s community impact
through strategic membership growth. This initiative focuses on investment in effective club-
opening tools, methods and retention strategies.

Build. Nurture. Retain. is not a membership campaign. Campaigns begin and end. By contrast,
Build. Nurture. Retain. is designed as an ongoing initiative to make membership growth and club
opening an integral part of Kiwanis culture — by combining ongoing recruitment efforts with
realistic goals.

Nurturing NEW clubs:

  • Organize teams of club openers and coaches who will work in tandem during a newclub’s first 90 days to ensure a strong start.
  • After a new club’s first 90 days, provide monthly support and mentoring — including membership initiatives — for an additional 21 months.
  • Help existing clubs create a multiyear plan for committing to a recruitment tactic and goal.
  • Provide additional resources and volunteer support for clubs entering their third year because statistics show that many clubs falter by year four.
  • Kiwanis will identify two groups of vulnerable clubs each year. Present each club withachievable goals and monitor progress.

Nurturing EXISTING clubs:

  • Your Kiwanis club’s dedication to your community shows in its service. Showcase that enthusiasm so potential members can see — and help increase — your impact on the kids in your area.
  • Examining where the club is today.
  • Strategizing where the club wants to be in the future.
  • Analyzing which membership strategies work best for the club.
  • Deciding how to plan recruitment efforts to meet the goals.
  • Clubs may begin this process with club officers and board of directors. The club leadership may task the membership chair to examine overall member efforts. A focus group may be formed to look at recent membership trends and envision future potential. The entire club can take part in a membership retreat or series of planning sessions to grow the club.

No matter how you start your membership plan, all club members need to work together — with
the challenge of providing a club experience that keeps members coming back and motivates
new members to join.  Once the initial membership plan is created, it is imperative to schedule regular updates on the progress. Kiwanis International provides tools and some staff or volunteer support to assist clubs with recruitment and retention.
