Let’s Spring into Action to Serve the Children of the World!

Greetings, fellow Pennsylvania Kiwanians,

On this Memorial Day, I would like to ask our members to take time to honor those in uniform who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of our great nation. We are truly grateful to those who lost their lives defending freedom around the world. Many Kiwanis Clubs are involved in Memorial Day services and observations, and help out with placing American flags on the graves of military personnel. And, on this holiday let’s also thank those on active duty for their service to our country.

The past two weeks have been extremely busy for your Governor. On Monday, May 12, we were finally able to organize the new Kiwanis Club of Greater Latrobe! Charter members of that club approved their By-Laws, and elected officers and board members. Lee Intachai was unanimously elected to serve as their charter President. Other members stepped up to the plate to serve as officers and Board of Directors. They initially agreed to meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month, at 6:30 PM at the West Media Group offices in downtown Latrobe. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Latrobe is well on its way to being a dynamic force for good in that community!

Meanwhile, we are gaining traction in building a new Kiwanis Club in the Northampton Area. We are up to 13 new applicants, with 15 needed for charter strength. We hosted an informational meeting on May 20, at the Northampton Area Public Library that was attended by 11 new or prospective members. We have another meeting scheduled for Wednesday, June 4 at the Northampton Recreation Center, at which time we expect to have enough charter members to organize the club. Our Northampton Kiwanis New Club Opening (NCO) Team is working hard to get this club across the finish line!

I took some time off last week to travel to Milwaukee with First Lady Peg to attend our granddaughter’s graduation form the Milwaukee School of Engineering, where she earned a degree with High Honors in Civil Engineering. She starts her new job next week with an engineering firm in Madison, Wisconsin. We are very proud of her.

Then, on Monday, May 19, I had the pleasure of attending a meeting of the Kiwanis Club of State College where that club awarded six $1,000 college scholarships to deserving students of State College HS. Prior to the meeting, I participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony in front of South Hills School of Business and Technology for the unveiling of a “Blessing Box.” I was impressed with the quality of that structure, which will contain non-perishable food, personal hygiene products, books and more. The sign on the front of the box reads “TAKE what you need LEAVE what you can.” What an amazing new project for that Kiwanis Club! They just celebrated their 100th Anniversary two days before. They have left an enduring legacy within that community. Congratulations, Kiwanis Club of State College!

I am looking forward to my visit with the Kiwanis Club of Fort LeBoeuf next Saturday, May 31, for their big “Spring Fling” event. I will be presenting their club with my second quarter “Rise in Membership” award at that time.

That’s about it for now. Please continue your efforts to increase membership in your clubs. The registration deadline for the Kiwanis International Convention in Pittsburgh has been extended to May 28. We have exceeded our District goal of 100 attendees! Thanks for all of your efforts to represent your clubs at the convention. And for your delegate’s support of our own Cathy Szymanski as candidate for Kiwanis Vice-President. “Kiwanis Needs Cathy.” How proud we will all be WHEN she is elected as our next KI VP!

Keep the faith, and “Rise and Shine for the Kids!”

Best wishes,

Governor Tom

Pennsylvania District Governor
