Greetings, fellow Pennsylvania Kiwanians!
As we anxiously await warmer weather, our clubs are gearing up for a variety of spring projects. Easter Egg hunts. Spring picnics. Earth Day tree planting and cleanup projects. College scholarship applications. A busy time of the year for Kiwanis Club everywhere!
On March 26 I had the pleasure of attending the Kiwanis Club of Palmer Township’s 75th Anniversary breakfast, at the Kiwanis Youth Center in Palmer Township, just outside of Easton, Pa. Over 60 members, local officials, and other guests were in attendance. Palmer President Ronald Roth greeted everyone. Janet Owen, Division17/18 Lt. Governor and I offered congratulatory remarks. The Palmer Kiwanis Club boasts 46 members and provides a plethora of services to their community. Another milestone anniversary for one of our District clubs. Congratulations, Kiwanis Club of Palmer Township!
This past Saturday I was invited to stop by the Kiwanis Club of Emmaus’ 73rd annual Easter Egg Hunt at their community park. Over 450 families attended, and the club provided over 10,000 eggs for the hunting! They also arranged to have 3 food trucks there offering family-friendly prices on popular items.
On Sunday, First Lady Peg and I traveled to Danville, to support that Kiwanis Club’s FIRST, perhaps annual “Cash Bingo” fundraiser. It was great meeting members of that club and enjoying 20 games of bingo with a $100 prize for each. Alas, Lady Luck was not with Peg and me that afternoon, but a good time was had by all. Congratulations to the Kiwanis Club of the Danville Area for hosting a highly successful first-time fundraiser!
This past weekend I also had the opportunity to attend the Pennsylvania Circle K Board Meeting in Allentown. Thank you for inviting me, Circle K Governor Michael Mullisky and Administrator Brett Cutright. I found it to be very informative and optimistic for the upcoming Circle K year.
And just last Wednesday, I announced the 2nd quarter winner of my “Rise Up Your Membership” contest – the Kiwanis Club of Fort LeBoeuf! That club has added 7 new members since October 1, and has ambitious plans for many more in the months ahead. I called President Mark Rose to congratulate him and his club for this remarkable achievement. Fort LeBoeuf is now tied with the Kiwanis Club of Williamsport as the largest club in the Pennsylvania District with 53 members. I will be heading out to that community on May 31 for the Kiwanis Club’s annual “Spring Fling” event. At that time I will present their club with a Certificate of Recognition, a $100 Sheetz gift card, and a $100 donation to their service account. Kudos to Fort LeBoeuf Kiwanis for their efforts to add more “hands of service” to their club.
We are optimistic that on April 22, the new Kiwanis Club of Latrobe will organize and submit their charter application to Kiwanis International! A meeting of members who have applied and submitted their dues, as well as other charter member prospects, have been invited to a meeting that evening at St. Vincent College in Latrobe. At that meeting, assuming there are at least 15 paid members who have applied, our New Club Opening Team will facilitate the election of officers, adoption of Bylaws, and other procedures required for a new club to open. I will be thrilled to welcome that club into our Pennsylvania Kiwanis family when the time is right.
Our Northampton New Club Opening team is preparing to open a club in that community the week of May 5. We have already had a couple of team meetings, and have others coming up on April 15 and 28. We will soon be making appointment phone calls, and to prepare for visits to new member prospects that week. Wish us well!
Our Board of Directors will be holding its next meeting, in person, on Saturday, April 26 from 9 AM to 12 PM in Allentown. We will be meeting at the new DaVinci Science Center in downtown Allentown, where the Kiwanis Foundation of Allentown sponsors an exhibit. There are many important issues on our agenda. If any member in the District would like to review the minutes from any of our District Board meetings, feel free to submit your request to Secretary Melissa Simpson.
In the weeks and months ahead, continue efforts to grow your club’s membership. May is Kiwanis “Membership Month.” Plan a membership drive next month! Use the ACE toolbox. Schedule a club “Open House”, community mixer, or other event. There is a wealth of information on the Kiwanis International website. And, feel free to reach out to our District Membership Chair Mike Coolbaugh for ideas and suggestions. Let’s all “Rise and Shine for the Kids!”
Have a blessed Passover and Easter,
